Raised in Westville, NJ, John found his passion for construction at the age of 14 while working as a carpenter’s assistant. This led him to building trade school to study carpentry and he has now been in the industry for over 46 years.
Throughout John’s career, he has served as a head cabinet maker, a journeyman union carpenter, and a project superintendent supervising various project types all along the east coast. Looking back on his career John most fondly remembers his time building high scale restaurants in New York City. “I loved building the more eccentric, over-the-top designs. It was always so satisfying to see the completed project that was also a work of art. It even allowed me to meet a lot of interesting people such as, Candice Bergen, Lenny Kravitz, and even Courtney Love.”
John has been with Scungio Borst Associates since 2012 and is very much appreciated and admired by his colleagues. “I have worked with John Genther for over twenty years. One of John’s strongest traits is his quick and cutting sense of humor which is greatly appreciated when times get tough.” says Joe Sturgis, a longtime colleague. “John is a valued member of our corporate family and has always been willing to take on some of the most challenging of projects and help drive them to completion. We are so thankful for his efforts and the sacrifices that he and his family have made while handling different projects and geographies over the years.” says owner, Phil Borst.
John and his wife, Betty, now call Pittman, New Jersey their home. His children, Chris and Meg, also live nearby. Away from work, John enjoys traveling, refurbishing vintage cars, and spending time with his grandson Jackson, who just turned one this past month.
