What would you do if you were told from a young age not to get into the construction business? Well, if you’re Matt Dutton, you go ahead and get into the construction business anyway.
Growing up in Springfield, PA, Matt is the oldest son of four (4) children to Ben and Mary Jane Dutton. In Summer of 1993, taking after generations of successful Dutton construction men and women, his Grandfather Benjamin Dutton got Matt his first construction job working on the Terminal C Apron Project as a concrete laborer while he was in between semesters at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. After two years at Kutztown University, Matt left to work full time as a laborer and operator in the residential housing business and attended the Delaware County Community College Construction Management Program at night. With a CM certification in hand, entrepreneurial blood in his veins, Matt had an opportunity to launch Global Stampscape Systems, a commercial union concrete, masonry and excavation company. After many years of success, Matt and his partner, decided to sell the company. After selling, Matt worked as a Superintendent for a large Philadelphia based Construction Management firm. When the work slowed up because of the recession in 2010, Matt then launched Bigg Dutt’s BBQ, a business dedicated to one of his other life passions – BBQ sauce and smoked meat! With four flavors landing on local store shelves and a full-service catering arm, his sauce became a huge hit. In 2012, while running the BBQ business during the day, he was fortunate enough to land a nighttime superintendent job with Scungio Borst & Associates. The business was so successful that he was able to sell it to a larger supplier. This presented him with the opportunity to return to his original passion, yes, you guessed it, construction.
Matt has now been a construction manager with Scungio Borst for seven (7) years, making a huge impact through his deep knowledge of concrete and his fun personality. “Matt’s background is in Sitework/Concrete making him our “go-to” construction manager for these types of projects. As a diverse construction management professional, Matt has been able to successfully take on simultaneous PM/Superintendent roles for some recent projects. This is a testament to his command of both field and contracting operations. Additionally, we have placed Matt in a mentoring role to some of our younger staff, where his leadership talents are helping SBA continue to develop a strong foundation of field managers.” says, Nick Fornaro, Director of Operations.
Matt likes to say that he is “hard to handle” just like the title to the hit song by The Black Crowes, his favorite band. He spends a lot of his personal time coaching his sons, Cole and Max’s baseball and basketball teams. When he has a break from being a dad, he enjoys mountain biking, lifting weights, playing guitar, collecting seashells, and of course, grilling, cooking and barbecuing. Leaving us to ask ourselves, when can we try some?
